As someone who cares about clear thinking, I’ve been a fan of poker for a while. So talking to Dan Zack (2022 World Series of Poker Player of the Year) about poker fundamentals and decision-making was simply put — a nerd-snipingly, great time.
What touched me the most was Dan’s insight about being at peace:
I think it [poker] teaches being at peace with things out of your control and just handling things that are in your control…I'm not gonna get upset about it because that's just a part of how life works, is everything can't always go right.
The notion of being at peace strikes a nerve with me because I’ve been thinking a lot about longevity. Things go unimaginably wrong. Things go unimaginably well. How do you keep going day-to-day, month-to-month, year-to-year, decade-to-decade while progressing but remembering to enjoy the ride?
